Why It’s Important To Set Short Term Goals

Have you ever gone on a car trip without knowing where you were going?  It can be a fun adventure to do this.  You can just get in and drive and see where the road takes you.  You may end up seeing some things that you might not otherwise see.  Or, you might end up getting carjacked in a rough neighborhood.

While it might be fun going on a road trip to nowhere, imagine doing this every single time you get into a car.  Each time you drive, you just go aimlessly in different directions.  You never take a map nor do you know where you need to go.  If you want to go out for food, you drive aimlessly until you happen upon a place that sells food.   Does that sound like fun or a lot of wasted time?

Chances are that you answered the latter.  It would be an incredible waste of time to do this, not to mention gas.  And imagine the frustration!  You would never be happy.  Every single time you got into the car you would never know how long it was going to take you to get what you needed to survive.

Living your life without goals is similar to the above experience.  Goals are a map of where you want to go in life.  The ultimate goal is the destination.  In the above case, a destination would be the grocery store.  The short term goals to get to the grocery store would be turn left, turn right, park….you get the picture.

Setting short term goals every day is important if you want to achieve a long term goal.  Most of us have dreams or ambitions.  Some of us set about achieving those dreams by reaching a pattern of short term goals designed to get us one step closer to the big dream.

Some people have dreams and ambition but do not know how to go about achieving their dream through the use of short term goals.  Short term goals are necessary if you want to get anywhere on the road of life.  Imagine telling someone that you want them to go from New Mexico to Maine without giving them a map.  It would take them a long time to meander around trying to find their way, particularly if they did not know where Maine even was or had any sort of concept of a road map.

Living your life without goals is similar to getting in a car and driving aimlessly.  While it is good to be spontaneous and flexible in life, it can be frustrating for you and anyone around you if you continue to go through life without knowing where you are going or how you are going to get there.

We all have needs and dreams.  Setting goals is the one way we reach our dreams in the roadmap that is life.
