What do you want to be when you grow up?  That is a question we often think of children asking.  Unfortunately, there are many adults who are still asking themselves this question. 

Very often in life, we allow life to lead us around instead of us leading ourselves around.  Many people today are stuck in jobs that they hate.  They get up in the morning dreading to go to work and manage to get through the day.  They anxiously await quitting time so they can go home.  They covet weekends and holidays. 

The average person spends more than half of their waking day at work and works most of their life.  We only get one life - yet many of us spend most of it doing something that we hate.  Why?  Because we need to provide for our basic needs - food, clothing and shelter.  In most cases, we are not only responsible for ourselves, but other people as well.

We can avoid spending most of our lives working at a job that we hate by setting career goals.  Career goals can be set at any stage in our life.  It is best if we set them early, but we should never feel “trapped” in a job that we hate.  There is always a way out.  The first thing you need to do, however, is know what you want to be when you grow up.

Once you have realized your long term goal, which is what you want to be, then you can work towards achieving that goal through a series of short term goals.  If, for example, you work as a secretary but really want to own your own business, you can realize that dream as your ultimate goal.  Your short term goals would be as follows:

  • Figure out what type of business you want to own;
  • Learn as much as you can about that business including school courses;
  • Get a part time job in the business that you can work at while keeping your secretary job;
  • Develop a business plan and save money;
  • Apply for a business loan

There would be many other smaller goals incorporated into these short term goals as well.   You can put a time limit on the ultimate goal, say five years, or you can leave the time limit open, depending upon your type of personality.  Most people work better with a deadline, but many are self driven.  As long as you continue to work towards your goal, you will eventually get where you want to go.

It is never too late to realize what you want to be when you grow up and begin working your way towards that goal.  There have been many people throughout history who have realized a dream late in life.  Actor James Cagney started painting when he was retired from films.  Actor Jimmy Stewart wrote poems when he was in his 70s, long after retiring.  Whether you are young or old, career goals can still allow you lead a more fulfilling life.

According to this particular study, which is based on Emmet Velton’s classic paper, “There has been a body of research empirically validating our ability to positively or negatively change our moods by reading phrases like “I feel very good” or “I am afraid.”

So, how do we go about dislodging thoughts of unhappiness?

1. Be aware. We have to catch ourselves when we are about to indulge in negative thinking. In the first few days, we have to be very vigilant.

2. The moment we feel the onset of an unpleasant emotion, we have to identify its source as precisely as possible. Is it hatred? Hurt? Fear? Anxiety? Discontent? This is a very critical component of the process as related to the next step.

3. Search for the exact opposite of the negative emotion. Think of its antonym. For example, the moment we catch ourselves feeling “lazy,” we would call to mind an opposite adjective like “energetic.” We would then say to ourselves, “I feel energetic.”

If we view ourselves as “pessimistic”, we say “I am hopeful.” If we feel we are “incompetent’, we say “I feel ingenious.” What do we say if we see ourselves as “unmindful”? We say, “I am grateful.”

Can we use the same strategy even if we do not feel any unpleasant feelings? Of course! We are encouraged to think and say to ourselves statements like “I feel fabulous” to reinforce our mood, or statements like “I feel strong” or “I feel friendly” in order to enhance our character.

Other people have introduced variations to the said technique. Others say it aloud in front of the mirror every morning for ten minutes for twenty-one days. Expressing it aloud increases its effectiveness as it represents emotional involvement. This is the same as expressing positive affirmations and doing self-talk. Others find it more effective by writing the statements on paper, as they become more “physically” involved.

Try it out. It doesn’t matter which way you choose to use. What’s important is that you become aware of the direction of your thoughts and change it. You’ll see a brighter, more positive you emerge and that is the secret to happiness.
