It took quite a few years but Emily finally made up her mind that she had it with her husband’s negative drinking. She was exhausted from seeing Barry come home after 2:00 AM from drinking instead of spending much needed time with her and their son and daughter. She was also drained from the third DUI Barry recently received. Furthermore she was exhausted from generating justifications for Barry when he couldn’t make it to his job due to his problems with drinking. Not only this but she was concerned and depressed about the fact that their relationship was deteriorating due to Barry's abusive and excessive drinking. And lastly she was worn-out from the perilous financial jam into which he had placed his family due to his abusive drinking behavior. In short, Emily felt that her mental health was drifting away due to her husband's drinking problems.

When Hazardous and Abusive Drinking Inspires a Person to do Something Constructive About an Individual’s Problem Drinking

One Sunday morning when Emily was thinking about what she could do about her husband’s excessive and careless drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something positive to cut into the destructive cycle of Barry’s excessive and careless drinking behavior.

So she looked on the Internet under “alcohol rehabilitation” and discovered scores of rehabilitation clinics that were all located less than ten miles away from where her husband and she resided.

Since she didn’t know anything about these rehabilitation centers, she at long last made up her mind to call some of them and ask some important questions. When she called each rehab center she introduced herself and articulated that her spouse was exhibiting hazardous and abusive drinking behavior. She also mentioned that her husband had a comprehensive health insurance program at his place of employment and that residential or outpatient alcohol abuse rehab would be covered if a doctor in the company health program prescribed the rehabilitation.

At one rehabilitation clinic, Emily was shocked that she was able to communicate directly with a counselor who asked her to come to the treatment facility to discuss her husband’s careless and hazardous drinking behavior in much greater detail.

Emily Talks to a Doctor About Her Husband’s Irresponsible and Hazardous Drinking

When Emily arrived at the treatment center, she filled out some necessary paperwork and then after approximately ten or fifteen minutes got to see a doctor.

After listening to Emily talk about her husband’s abusive drinking, the psychologist in a helpful but resolute manner told Emily how she may have played a role in her spouse’s excessive and unhealthy drinking through the years by minimizing his drinking behavior rather than letting him experience the results of his unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior.

Emily Learns That She Has Been Enabling Her Husband’s Careless and Hazardous Drinking

Stated somewhat more forcefully, the physician told Emily that she may have been accidentally enabling Barry’s excessive and hazardous drinking behavior. The therapist also underscored the fact that although Emily could not control her husband’s conduct, with the encouragement and support of the rehabilitation team at the rehabilitation facility she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Barry’s unhealthy and excessive drinking but she would also be able to learn how to motivate him to make an appointment at the treatment facility so that he could talk about his harmful drinking behavior with a therapist.

Fortunately after Emily mentioned this to her husband, and he saw that she meant business, Barry told her that he had been quite upset with his abusive and careless drinking behavior and that he was very comforted to hear that Emily wanted to do something affirmative about his unhealthy drinking behavior. As a consequence, he scheduled an appointment to see a therapist at the local alcohol rehabilitation facility. It almost goes without saying that this enhanced Emily's sense of worth.

Barry Agrees to Meet With a Counselor About His Abusive and Excessive Drinking

While simply calling a rehab facility does not mean that a person’s abusive and excessive drinking behavior will become less problematic or that one's warning signs of alcoholism or the alcohol abuse signs one displays will simply vanish, scheduling an appointment is without a doubt a crucial aspect in the treatment process. And since Barry was serious about getting quality assistance for his negative drinking, the probability for a successful recovery was greatly augmented.
