Today the 19th November 2008 is being celebrated as the GIS Day. You maybe asking what is "GIS"?

"GIS" stands for Geographical Information System/s. According to Wikipedia, a geographical information system captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that refers to or is linked to location. In practical terms, GIS enable users to manipulate and present data such as addresses or locations on a map, making it easier to visualise and interpret.

Also, many of us might not realise the importance and the vital role GIS is already playing in our lives. One of the easily recognisable benefits of GIS are the "Satellite Navigation (Sat Nav) devices used in cars for directions and planning journeys. For others their interaction with GIS is when using mobile/cell phones that have applications that enable them to find locations using google maps.

Emergency services such as the Fire and Rescue rely heavily on GIS to respond and despatch resources to incidents in an effective manner. For instance, the address or location details you provide them are then overlayed onto a map using GIS to direct the emergency services on the shortest route to the incident. In other cases, utility providers like water companies use GIS to identify pipes or other infrastructure that need repair; the deployment of manpower to those specific areas that need repair saves them time and money.

Even retail companies that collect customer details apply GIS to this information to make decisions like where to locate retail outlets and which geographical areas have the customers with spending power to afford their products. These examples are just a few ways in which public and private sector organisations utilise GIS to enhance and streamline their operations. In case this article has piqued your interest in GIS then check out the website celebrating the GIS day.
